What is metering and data collection?
For Half-Hourly metered electricity supplies having agents appointed as Meter Operator (MOP) and Data Collector (DC) is a mandatory requirement. A MOP supplies, installs and maintains the physical meter and communication link, whereas the DC’s role is to collect and distribute consumption data to your supplier. MOP and DC services can be provided by either the same or different parties.
Getting your metering and data collection services set up correctly has the potential to save you money, not just by helping you understand and reduce waste usage but also by reducing the actual cost of these services.
If you don’t know how much you are currently paying for MOP and DC services or have a direct agreement that you signed some time ago, chances are that you are paying more than you should be and there will be a financial benefit.
Do I have to allow my supplier to do this on my behalf?
The simple answer is no. You are free to enter into a direct MOP and DC agreement with a provider of your choice, rather than allowing your energy supplier to do so on your behalf. Depending on supplier, default charges for them to appoint agents on your behalf can be very punitive.
